Algaraklown- Hospital clowns

algaraklownAlgaraklown is a non-profit organization that promotes the power of laugh as a relief and accompaniment in vulnerable health-care situations. Its main tasks are centred on the paediatrics area of the Donostia Hospital where a couple of clowns realize visits during the week. In addition, Algaraklown also goes to different Gipuzkoa’s old peoples’ homes.

That is, through care giver clowns or also known as hospital clowns (HC) the patients’ lifestyle is re-established to their daily life.

The project was created in 2011 and came up from the absence of humour therapy in hospitals. It is based on multiple researches that show humour as a lifestyle and the beneficial therapy of it in health care. The organization’s main goals are:

  •  Cooperate with the emotional and psychological well-being of hospitalized people.
  •  Calm down the patients’ situation, illness and background.

It is important to take into consideration that hospitalizations imply adversities. That is why the main goal of Algaraklown’s accompaniment is turning both the patients’ and their families’ situation into a way of humour, happiness and tenderness. For that reason, patients’ stimulation and cooperation are worked in each visit to their own benefit.

All this conditions are possible thanks to the health team and the formation of professional clowns as well as the social-supportive initiatives that defend this as a necessary task. In the end, health-enjoyment is an essential human right so, do you know a better way of collaborating than with a red nose?

Cruz Roja

GURUTZE_2The Red Cross is a volunteer-based humanitarian institution, on a mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering, and thereby contribute to the maintenance and promotion of human dignity. The organisation has been working in Gipuzkoa since 1870, and even though its beginning was linked to health assistance, nowadays, there is a far greater focus on social programs, and it is through these programs that we offer solutions to the main social problems.

As such, we have increased and extended the program’s aim to helping people who find themselves socially excluded or living in a vulnerable situation. Among these, we work directly with elderly people and/or people with disabilities.

One of our flagship activities is “Gurekin Blai”. Where, Red Cross volunteers help people with reduced mobility, to have access to the beach and to be able to swim in the sea using adapted transport and chairs. This program helps eliminate barriers faced by people with mobility problems, as well as preventing their isolation and promoting their social participation.

We would like to thank you for supporting this initiative, whose essence is, as one of the participants describes it: 'breaking barriers to return to the beach', an experience that many of them haven´t been able to do for many years.

DEVELOPMENT

Ak' Wank

AK_WANK

Within the InAurora project (global communications project that promotes development cooperation with a gender-equality perspective) by Euskal Fondoa (Association of Basque Local Cooperating Entities), we are working hand-in-hand with Guatemalan local organisation INCIDE (Civil Initiative for Democracy) in the Ak´Wank Race for Women’s Rights.

The Ak´Wank (“New Knowledge”, in Q’eqchi language) Race will be celebrated on the 5th of March in the Fray Bartolomé de las Casas Municipality, in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. It will be 8 kilometres long and 300 women will take part. This race has a strong symbolic meaning, since it reflects the courage of many indigenous women to fight for their rights through a sports event. Many women will take part in this celebration on the 5th of March to denounce the oppression they suffer and claim their rights.

Through Euskal Fondoa, the Ak´Wank Race is twinned with the Behobia-San Sebastian popular race, which every year collaborates with several social projects through its Solidarity Dorsal. This year, in its 50th edition, the Behobia-San Sebastian will be twinned with the Ak´Wank Race in order to support the struggle for the rights of indigenous women in Guatemala.

Events like these are necessary to support all those brave women who dare to step ahead. For this reason, we invite everybody to get involved in the popular races both in the Basque Country and Guatemala through the Solidarity Dorsal, to actively denounce the inequalities that many women suffer.

Throughout this year, InAurora will develop several awareness-raising and twinning actions that you will be able to follow through www.inaurora.org, a platform that seeks social change departing from the belief that improving living conditions is possible.

We are all volunteers and many of us have found with the problem of not knowing how to do it, where to begin ... and that in many cases there is also a distrust of the major NGO’s by their slowness, to the costs involved, by its own bureaucracy and by mistrust of the fate of their funds received.

We are united by the desire to do something for others and we think that if it is possible to help actively and directly. You can achieve small victories by adding efforts and we are already many anonymous people united by a idea and a same dream.

Fundación Maga

fundacion_magaFundación Maga is an initiative aimed at promoting aid and support projects for children living in developing countries.

Our main scope of action focuses on providing education to children. They are especially vulnerable and at greater risk of suffering exclusion, problems that worsen when combined with illnesses and/or poverty.

At Fundación Maga we focus on education as we believe it is the main driver of development and a key pillar of personal evolution. Moreover, it is the basis and the driver of a country’s progress.

So far, we have completed projects in Cambodia and Sierra Leona, involving the construction of schools and water wells, benefiting not only children, but their families and communities.

Thanks to your help we’re going to set up a small gym for the “Centro Arrupe” in Cambodia, to be used for rehabilitation and physical education for disabled children. Cambodia is among the nations with the highest percentage of physically disabled people in the world due to the consequences of the war, which left the terrifying figure of 10 million anti-personnel mines around the country.

45 disabled children and young people currently live at the centre, and will benefit from having a place where they can do exercise and specific rehabilitation. Sport is very important for them as they have a special need to exercise their muscles and spend time preventing lesions.

CULTURAL PROJECTS

LOGO_DOCKDock of the Bay is an independent festival organised by Qualia, a non-profit organisation, which already has eight editions behind it. It concentrates on showing music documentaries - which are otherwise very hard to find in cinemas - in Donostia-San Sebastián.

As well as showing the films, Dock of the Bay also works to promote and publicise the Basque film industry and new film-makers working in it.  To this end we are working in two specific areas.

One is setting up a new international forum with the primary goal of helping new film-makers to find the finance they need to go ahead with making their films.

The other involves a creating a New Audiences section, whereby we work with schools in Gipuzkoa to encourage young people to attend special showings in order to raise their awareness of culture, film and music.

With your support we want to make these two sections happen and so carry on moving forward in the way we organise this event focused on culture, documentary film, music and art.

Although different actions have been implemented for conservation of the species, we have set new challenges that happen to disseminate and divulge the problem to which Txingudi's toad population must face. Among the actions that we are going to implement, we emphasize the creation of a Monographic Collection about amphibians. Why Not?

Why_NotWhy Not Foundation works to improve the quality of life of people with mental illness or disorder. It aims to promote their relational/interpersonal networks and support inclusive leisure and free time. In addition, it fights against the stigma and taboo around mental illness, as the recovery of these people has an added difficulty, due to self-embarrassment.

Many of these people live a routine of which they are not able to get out. In Why Not Foundation we invite them to dream, to change their usual way of  thinking and to have motivation and hope so they can live their everyday life with a different, new joy.

The activities in WHY NOT are based on the following strategies:

- Artistic and creative therapies. A disease is not just the absence of health, but the difficulty or inability to access one’s own potential in the context they live in. These therapies enable mentally ill people to take an active role in the fulfillment of the development and destiny of their own lives.

· Sociocultural therapies. Patients with mental illness lack own initiative to carry out the plans we offer within and outside centres, as a result of their apathy and their tendency to inactivity.

· Inclusion: After a hospital discharge or after an admission, people with a mental disorder have to face their everyday lives and have difficulties, so we offer a space in which they can socialise, as a further step towards their inclusion.

· Sport as therapy. Psychological experts confirm that sport is one of the best therapies to treat mental illness.

With the money raised from supporting bib numbers, we intend to sustain Why Not Radio, a radio project carried out by people with mental illness with the help of Why Not Foundation. These programmes are broadcast from different mental health centres and from the foundation itself. It arised from the need to create a space in which participants can interact with the society without feeling the pressure of prejudice, bringing closer the people who have been diagnosed with some kind of mental illness.
